Let’s dive straight in, shall we … just keep in mind that the following step-by-step instructions assume you have done this before on a previous version or, that you are able to work out how to setup few things using the graphical interface.

I – Nested ESXi Specs

I will actually have a set of three nested ESXi hosts with the same specs. The specs of these VM are below:

  • CPU: 2x
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Storage: 8 GB Thick Provisioned
  • Network Cards: 6x VMXNET3
  • CDROM virtual unit w/ ISO image attached

II – Nested ESXi VM Installation

  1. Create a VMware account if you don’t already have one
  2. Download an evaluation version (or full version assuming you have the correct license)
  3. Attach the ISO image it to your VM
  4. Power on the VM
  5. Go through the Wizard

NOTE: If you are doing this from a Mac, you will be required to press the function keys; to do so, use the cmd + fn + Fxy combination. Also, be careful that the keyboard is by default mapped to US. For example, my password includes the “@” character; to type it, I actually use the combination shift + ;

III – Post Installation Tweaks

Open the VM’s console and using the DCUI, make the following changes:

  1. Enable ESXi Shell
  2. Enable SSH
  3. Change the IP address
  4. Change IP address assignment from DHCP to Static
  5. Change hostname – I named mine as vesxiv6-01
  6. Change DNS settings
  7. Optionally, disable IPv6 – restart required
  8. If you skipped steps (5), make sure you restart the management network
  9. Connect to your host as root via SSH
  10. Install VMware tools for nested ESXi hosts by running the following two commands:

esxcli network firewall ruleset set -e true -r httpClient

esxcli software vib install -v http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmw-tools/esxi_tools_for_guests/esx-tools-for-esxi-9.7.0-0.0.00000.i386.vib -f

Next, let’s install the VCSA (Virtual Centre Server Appliance).
